Welcome to my website!
Well, I’m Maija Elizabeth and I’m 22 years old! I live in Maryland, where I’ve lived for 13 years. I am a very passionate person by nature, so I care deeply about a range of topics, like helping animals and caring for the planet.
Obviously, I’m a big ocean lover! I started cleaning up the beach when I was 14 after visiting Loggerhead Marinelife Center in Florida. They rescue sea turtles that come in with missing fins, damaged shells, and what really stood out to me was the turtles that had ingested plastic. Literally right after going there we went to the beach and I started noticing plastic everywhere! During the pandemic, I wouldn’t go to beach anymore and had learned that most of the trash that gets washed up on the beach comes from being washed out from land. I noticed how littered my community wasn’t and was filling up multiple large trash bags every week. By doing that, I got to connect with a lot of my neighbors during a time when there was hardly any human connection and that felt so special.
I started my Sustainably Maija platforms in 2021, as a place to post about how people can reduce waste and to share my clean ups. I needed something to get me through the pandemic and through the end of my senior year of high school because I was honestly a nervous wreck about entering adulthood. It’s now been 4 years and I have connected with many amazing people along the way. Social media has a lot of problems, but these platforms have done amazing things for me!
